Kentucky Derby Contenders

Pony Picks

Kentucky DerbyIn just under 12 days, the Kentucky Derby betting lines will stop taking peoples wagers as the 20 contenders for this year's first leg of the Triple Crown get set to do battle. To say that fans getting ready to bet on Kentucky Derby have no idea who to pick, would be putting the dilemma lightly. Here is a look at a few contenders for fans to put their money on.

After winning one of the toughest prep races in the history of the Kentucky Derby, the Florida Derby, Nick Zito trained three year old colt Dialed In is a top the leader board today as the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby. In the four races it has run in, during its early career, Dialed In has never placed outside of the money. As a matter of fact, save for a poor showing in March, in which Dialed In finished third, Dialed In has won all of its races. The only trouble with Dialed In, is that the horse hasn't created a pattern yet, in terms of whether it is a speed horse or a pace horse. Meaning to say, if you bet on Dialed In, don't be alarmed if it starts off slow, as it is likely to recover and finish within the money.

Aside from Dialed In, three horses that saw their stock rise dramatically were Risen Star Grade I stakes winner Mucho Macho Man, Wood Memorial winner Toby's Corner, and Arkansas Derby winner Archarcharch. Former odds on favorite Uncle Mo rounded out the top five of this week's AP Kentucky Derby contender's poll, as many fans aren't sold on Uncle Mo being a bust after finishing third at the Wood Memorial two weeks ago. However, aside from the third place finish at the Wood Memorial and the apparent curse of the Breeders Cup Juvenile winners losing at the Kentucky Derby, Uncle Mo is a horse you should bet on with a lot of caution.
